They say every town has its shed blood, that every person has skeletons in the closet, but they'd probably have to come up with a whole new saying for this town.
Years ago vampires were unnoticed in Mystic Falls, wearing a special jewel that gave them the ability to walk during the day. This came about when Katherine Pierce showed up. She was gorgeous and everyone wanted her, including both Salvatore brothers. Naturally brothers would have issues with each other when they wanted the same woman, situations like these usually worked out when the woman told who she fancied. The problem here? Katherine enjoyed both Damon and Stefen. And besides, with her being a vampire, why should she have to choose? So she didn't, instead she gave both her blood, which would turn both brothers into vampires if their deaths happened soon.
They did, of course.
Shortly afterward, the town found out about the vampires and went on killing spree. But it isn't so easy to kill a vampire, so they locked them in a crypt below Fell's Church, putting a protective curse on there. No vampire can go in without being trapped, no vampire can come out. Katherine was caught by the Salvatores' own father and when they tried to rescue her, he shot both his sons. She was a slick one still and when she was taken to the crypt, she made a deal with a guard who was obsessed with her, if he let her free, she'd turn him into a vampire. What aging man could resist a beauty like her?
Now for those of you who know Stefen, I know what you're thinking, what a horrible thing for the guy, he's such a good fellow. And Damon's getting what he deserves. You couldn't be more wrong. You see, Stefen took to the life of a vampire, being that powerful and free, so much so that he attacked his own father. Damon, however, hated the hand that was dealt him, he tried not to feed, tried to kill himself, but Stefen instead brought a girl to him and told him he should accept who he was. Stefen didn't just sentence that girl to death, he even killed a small piece of Damon's humanity that day.
Damon and Stefen went their own ways after that, having managed to escape, barely. They met up every so often, but mostly they stay apart. Stefen decided that he couldn't stand to kill anymore, giving up humans for animals. Damon on the other hand, broken by what his brother and his first love had done to him, embraced the life of a vampire. He become cruel and vengeful, having told his brother he would make his life a living hell for what'd had been done to him , but there was still some caring in him. Which he proved in January 1978 when he met a young woman named Destiny Crawford.
On her way home in Chicago, Illinois, she was attacked by a random man on the street. There was no doubt in her mind that he'd kill her, after he took whatever he wanted. As she tried to fight him off, he was suddenly jerked away from her. In shock, she watched while a man pinned her attacker to the ground as he went for the neck. The muffled screams made her want to run, but she found she was unable.
Damon pulled away from the man to meet her eyes. His trademark smirk crossed his lips as he watched her. She took notice of that before she ever noticed the blood he allowed to escape, as it trickled down his chin. After a few words were exchanged, he decided he liked this one and wouldn't kill her. Yet. He sent her on her way, but followed her from then on. Whenever he caught her scent, he would find her, he figured this would scare her, make her nervous, but it did the opposite.
Destiny soon learned to feel when Damon was around, she could almost always find him in a crowd. They rarely talked, though he did like to sneak up on her to whisper naughty things into her ear. He also protected her. Someone push into her, he'd show up wondering why they weren't better behaved. Once, he almost killed a man in front of everyone that dared to call her an ugly name. If she hadn't touched him, hadn't grabbed his arm to pull him away, there's no telling what would have happened. Because of this, he noticed she grew a bit cocky. Another time she was attacked again, instead of trying to fight, she had simply said, "If you value your life at all, you'll leave me alone." He'd shown up at their side as soon as she finished. "You really should listen to her, the girl knows what she's talking about." he said before he grabbed the attacker. "Go home Destiny."
She didn't hesitate, she listened without question. And he was done playing the gentleman with her. He wanted her. When he showed up outside her apartment on the balcony to her bedroom, he expected her to be afraid, he wanted her to understand that he could easily take her life away. He taunted her, telling as much, telling her that she owed him for his saving her life twice. He wanted a little appreciation and he'd let her live long enough. He was sure fear would come into her eyes, instead that little minx invited him inside. The shock that came to his face was drowned immediately in desire for her.
Naturally, he didn't waste time. They spent all night in each others arms, come morning, she even tried to get him in the shadows. Took him forever to explain he couldn't burn in the sun. After that, he couldn't get enough of her and she was only to willing to give. Time went by quickly, though they didn't realize it until six months had past and her birthday came around. He was faced with the grave decision. Let her stay human, aging every year or turn her, keeping her forever as she was. She knew what he'd been thinking, how he wasn't for sure, but she did, she made the choice herself. She wanted to be with him and offered him her neck. So much could have gone wrong that night, but when the dawn rose, Damon helped Destiny hide in the shadows to keep from burning.
Like everything, nothing seems to last. She knew he had a secrets, certain things he refused to tell her, but she hoped to break those walls away. Nothing worked, after they'd been together for a few years, she realized he'd never give up his past for whatever reason. So she came to him one night, begging and pleading with him. No longer could she stand to have only half of him, she chose to become a vampire for him and all she asked for was him in return. He refused her and she was left with no choice but to walk away from him. She nearly died of the heartbreak and Damon was left to wonder why he couldn't give her the happiness she deserved.
